Whether your desk is scattered with papers and files, or perfectly organised, the state of your work environment says far more about you than you might think.
Do you have trouble locating your mouse or keyboard amongst the chaos of post-its, print outs, notepads, and empty mugs? Like us, we’re sure at one time or another, you’ve had to make excuses to shield the embarrassment of a messy desk, but the result of working in a cluttered environment will almost certainly mean you’re not working as productively as you could be.
Ok, it’s not all bad, you may well be surprised to learn that employees who work in their own paper mountains are often said to have an extrovert personality making them friendly and welcoming to co-workers.
Everything has a place?
Is your desk perfectly organised? A mess-free workspace will naturally create a positive impression to visitors and colleagues, but surprisingly, minimalists are deemed to be less creative than their disorganised colleagues (we’re sure there are many exceptions to this suggestion). Amongst the many positives, employees with a spic and span workspace are more reliable, disciplined and enjoy working with structure.
How do you introduce a clutter-free office and ensure it works?
Now that’s a question, so let’s make the solution simple.
A clear desk policy needs to start at the top. Introduce a written policy or statement within your company handbook, stating your expectations, whether that means you would like desks to be clear at all times, or just at the end of each working day.
If you’re thinking of making a grander statement towards a clearer office, consider whether your business could adapt to a ‘paperless’ office. If you’re unsure, have a look around and do a little research, there are lots of articles on the internet promoting the many advantages to businesses and the environment.
It’s also worth ensuring you’re providing enough storage for your team including desk storage, lockers, bookcases, filing cabinets, and stationery cupboards.
And lastly, remember to lead by example! There really is no point enforcing a policy you can’t stick to yourself.
